Egypt, Sweden Discuss Renewable Energy & Smart Grid Cooperation

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, held high-level discussions with Dag Jolin Danfelt, Sweden’s Ambassador to Egypt, along with a delegation from Swedish power-technology company Linxon, led by CEO Stefan Reisacher. The meeting took place at the ministry’s headquarters in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital.

The talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, partnerships, and investment opportunities in renewable energy, smart grids, and integrated substation solutions, with the aim of enhancing grid stability and accelerating Egypt’s clean-energy transition.

Senior officials, including Deputy Minister Sabah Meshali and Mona Rizk, Chairperson of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), participated in discussions on leveraging advanced technologies and global expertise to modernise Egypt’s electricity infrastructure. Key areas included upgrading the unified national grid, expanding its capacity to absorb renewable energy, and improving the connection of wind and solar power plants to main transmission and distribution networks.

The meeting also explored the implementation of energy storage projects to improve grid reliability, ensure system stability, and maximise the contribution of renewable energy sources to Egypt’s power mix.

Minister Esmat underscored that adopting cutting-edge technologies is central to achieving higher efficiency and service quality under Egypt’s long-term energy transition strategy. He emphasised that grid modernisation is an ongoing process aimed at strengthening performance, ensuring reliable electricity supply, and enabling smoother integration of renewable energy into the national network.

Highlighting the role of the private sector, Esmat reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to encouraging local and international investment in the shift from conventional power networks to smart grid systems, describing the transition as a major milestone for the future of electricity transmission and distribution in Egypt.

The minister also praised the growing contribution of Swedish companies to Egypt’s energy sector and reiterated the country’s ambitious targets to increase the share of renewables to 42% by 2030 and 65% by 2040. He confirmed that Egypt continues to create favourable investment conditions to attract private sector participation in renewable and clean-energy projects.

The meeting reflects the shared commitment of Egypt and Sweden to strengthening energy infrastructure, promoting sustainable development, and supporting the transition toward a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient electricity system.
