Hindustan Zinc Limited, India’s only and the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, has reported energy savings exceeding 1 lakh gigajoules (GJ) and a reduction of over 20,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) in FY25, underscoring its commitment to climate action. The announcement coincides with National Energy Conservation Day, highlighting the company’s focus on efficiency and decarbonisation across its Rajasthan operations.
The reported energy savings are significant enough to match the annual electricity consumption of nearly 19,000 Indian households, based on average residential power usage estimates. The comparison demonstrates the real-world impact of industrial energy efficiency on national energy security.
Hindustan Zinc has implemented a wide range of initiatives to improve energy performance, including the deployment of high-efficiency equipment, installation of variable-frequency drives (VFDs), optimisation of smelting and heat processes, and the use of AI-enabled digital systems for real-time energy monitoring and control.
Alongside efficiency measures, the company has accelerated its shift toward renewable energy. In March 2025, Hindustan Zinc entered into a round-the-clock Power Delivery Agreement (PDA) with Serentica Renewables, aimed at scaling its green power capacity to 530 MW. The move supports the company’s target of sourcing 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by FY28.
These efforts align with Hindustan Zinc’s Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated decarbonisation pathway and its commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 or earlier, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Commenting on the milestone, Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, said the company is reimagining mining through energy efficiency, electrification, and renewable power adoption to create a low-carbon future for the industry.
During FY25, Hindustan Zinc also recorded 6.7 lakh tonnes of greenhouse gas emission savings, increased renewable energy to nearly 19% of its power mix, and was ranked the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year by S&P Global. The company further strengthened its sustainability credentials by becoming India’s first member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM).
As part of its outreach efforts, the company launched “The Power of Less” campaign to promote conscious energy use among employees and communities, reinforcing its long-term vision of supporting India’s clean energy transition and sustainable industrial growth.
