Solar Panels Charging Battery Storage – “Solar energy charging 2,000 MWh battery storage in Rajasthan”

Rajasthan, India – October 5, 2025: The Rajasthan government is set to enhance its solar energy infrastructure with a 2,000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), aimed at meeting peak-hour electricity demand and ensuring a steady supply of renewable power.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has approved the state government’s request for a four-hour battery cycle, which is considered ideal for Rajasthan due to its abundant solar resources and higher evening peak power demand. This new facility will complement two existing BESS projects under development totaling 4,000 MWh, bringing the state’s overall battery storage capacity to 6,000 MWh.

Ajitabh Sharma, Principal Secretary (Energy), highlighted the importance of the initiative:

“Battery storage will enable us to provide cheaper solar power even during evening and early morning hours, reducing reliance on costlier exchange power and moving Rajasthan closer to energy self-reliance.”

Battery Energy Storage Systems store electricity in rechargeable batteries and supply it when needed, stabilizing the grid and balancing demand. By charging during the day from solar plants and releasing energy during peak hours, these systems increase the efficiency and reliability of renewable energy.

Rajasthan’s energy department is also actively monitoring generation and consumption patterns from industrial-scale, rooftop, and Kusum solar projects, to optimize the use of stored power. According to Sharma, this marks the final stage of the current 6,000 MWh plan, but additional battery storage projects are expected as grid and demand needs evolve.

This development aligns with India’s broader renewable energy goals, as the country strives to increase the share of green energy and reduce dependency on conventional sources, contributing to a greener and more resilient power sector.
